Sensational Skaters
Sensational Skaters is an ongoing project about young skateboarders. I interview the skaters, getting a look into their life with skating. I only spend a few minutes interviewing them, but as I watch them skate and attempt tricks, I begin to see the love and ambition they have for the activity. I want to show the age range of young skaters and how long they have been skating, to share the stories of how they fell in love with the sport.
Ocean Green, 16
Ocean has been skating for seven years. He enjoys jumping the stair set and doing tricks. He wants to try and go pro or at least get sponsered.
Christian, 22
Christian skateboards and trades cryptocurrency. He has been skating for ten years and does it for fun.
Kai Green, 18
Kai started skating when he was eight years old and got his younger brother, Ocean, into skating. Kai encourages everyone to start skating because it builds self-esteem and community among others.
Manny, 17
Manny started skating two years ago after watching skate videos and seeing people skating in Costa Rica. He enjoys the “ghetto-ness and ratchet-ness” of the skate park where he can have fun and not get bothered.
Mari, 19
Mari has only been skating for five months and just recently started dropping in the bowl. They like the vibe of the skatepark and the atmosphere of the people. Mari finds skating fun and enjoys the risks that come with skating.
Alex, 21
Alex has been skating for ten years and decided to start after receiving his first flip phone. He only skates in his free time now after choosing to pursue a career rather than skate full time. Alex always listens to music with his headphones while skating.
